Guest blog! Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey

Ok people. Been a little in the poor house during the holidays and I didn't pick up anything new so back off. Happy to report that I did get a wonderful gift from my mother over the holidays. A bottle of Makers Mark and a set of their wax glasses! Thanks mom! So to compensate for my lack of efforts this past month, my cousin is stepping in to do a guest review on a bottle he picked up last month.

Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey - By Keith Adams

I hold myself somewhat responsible for the existence of this blog, having delivered that first bottle of Maker’s Mark to Matt’s house after several chat sessions about loading up on alcohol.  For my role in this, you’re welcome or I’m sorry…  You pick.

I thought it would be nice to do a guest review. It was really to benefit me more than anyone reading this blog or even Matt himself.  I mean, now I can come home with another bottle and tell my wife I’m reviewing this for a Bourbon review website.  Suddenly there are no questions asked and I’m met with a nod of approval that my drinking serves a higher purpose. In fact, this has gone over so well that additional reviews may be in my future.  Maybe we can even start a Tequila review blog next….. I may have found my special purpose in life.

Anyway, on to the Bourbon. There’s a liquor store near my home that seems to have a nice selection.  Not wanting to waste any time, I went through the many bottles on the shelves. I didn’t want to look like an idiot playing eenie, meanie in the liquor store so I did what any self respecting person would do, I chose one with a cool bottle. The Breckenridge Bourbon bottle has a cool mountain etched on the glass and hell, who doesn’t love the mountains.  Plus it had this bottle hanger touting it as one of the “Top Three Bourbons in the World!” This Bourbon has a gold fucking medal from some competition, that’s more than I can say.

Upon opening the bottle, there is a note of smoky oak and honey with a hint of vanilla and maybe some pepper.  Who the hell am I kidding, I’ve been sick for 2 weeks, this could be way off. Definitely smells smoother than Maker’s but I too like the bite Maker’s gives you.  I prefer my whiskey “neat” so I poured a couple shots into rocker glass and took a few sips. It definitely has a smoky, woody flavor with a very unpleasant aftertaste.  I would almost call it an alcohol/acetone aftertaste. I figured some of this odd aftertaste could be attributed to my cold so I put it away and decided to come back a week later. On second tasting, the following week, it was clear my cold was impacting my earlier review.  This time it ended with a strong nail polish remover flavor. My next test was to use this as a mixer with some coke.  This made it a more pleasant experience but… HOLY FUCK, who gave this thing a gold medal?!? Who are these judges? Were their taste buds damaged in a horrible hot coffee accident?

To be fair, I will bring the remainder of this bottle to Matt on my next trip to his house. I hate to bash on it too much because it may just be something I don’t particularly care for.  Maybe it’s better appreciated by people who are handing out medals at tasting competitions.
